Sort of like a cheery indie Starbucks with worse coffee, The Bean has three locations which are clustered in the East Village and are magnets for laptop workers, with copious plugs, fast free wifi, and lots of seating.

After their original location was taken over by a Starbucks, the owners built a new cafe on the corner of 2nd Ave and E 3th St. Fifteen foot ceilings, combined with floor to ceiling glass walls, provide lots of natural light to a space which is attractive in corporate coffee shop fashion. The entirety of the long E 3rd St wall has a comfy, cushion-covered banquette strewn with a variety of soft pillows. This is fronted with a long raw of faux marble two tops, and opposite this is a counter and three large pastry cases backed with a huge, colorfully-decorated blackboard listing the drink offerings. The back of the shop has a mid-sized communal table and a living room area complete with soft couches and chairs.

If you care about coffee at all, don’t drink it here – stick to the pre-made iced teas, which are pretty good. They also have beer and wine. The espresso machine is fully automatic, the drip coffee is made in a Bunn, and the coffee beans they sell at The Bean have no roast date. Music is bland classic rock, thankfully on low volume.
