Coffee Roaster

Unusual for the neighborhood that hosted the Beats back in the 1940s and ’50s but hasn’t done much to improve its coffee since then, Prodigy Coffee on Carmine St has already improved their brewing significantly since opening in January. Using their own Prodigy espresso blend and a plain work-horse La Marzocco, they pull a very thick and bright ristretto that seems to expand in the drinker’s mouth like a bite of strong cheese. That’s a high compliment. Their pourover coffee offerings are pretty good, but not as memorable as the espresso. All their coffee is roasted in Brooklyn at the Pulley Collective.

Sitting in the front window seat, looking out at Carmine St with a piece of cinnamon or chocolate babka is a treat. Their excellent babka is from Green & Ackerman in Brooklyn and their chocolate and almond croissants come from nearby Mille-Feuille. The space is airy and comfortable with white painted brick walls and chandeliers and ornately framed mirrors. The laptop slingers and meeting takers are certainly here, but so are the book readers. Turning paper pages. Prodigy Coffee plays Broken Bells, David Bowie and such at a reasonable volume and brings your order over to your table when it’s ready. They understand and value civility.
