Prima is the three-headed lovechild created when the owners of three East Village institutions, high end pizza restaurant Motorino, specialty coffee shop Ninth Street Espresso, and craft cocktail lounge Summit Bar, joined forces. A couple of storefronts down from Prune on East 1st St, Prima occupies a lightly-traveled block, and as such, doesn’t have much daytime traffic. People with casual coffee interest probably get diverted into the more inviting-looking Bluebird Coffee Shop near the corner of 1st Ave.

The dark-toned room, with exposed brick walls, is long and narrow, and has a somewhat clunky metal and glass front. Ten rectangular stool-height tables are arranged along the walls, their orientation changing after 5pm, when Prima switches from wifi users and coffee drinks to seafood eaters and cocktails. With fast, free wifi and plugs near most of the tables, it’s a good place to work on a laptop, and you’ll see a handful of people doing that on an average day.

Despite the Ninth Street Espresso origins, the espresso is inconsistently prepared, although generally better than Bluebird down the street. Weekday food offerings are limited to a few croissants and such. There’s brunch on the weekends, and lunch is supposed to be offered at some point.
