Coffee Roaster
Cafe Grumpy, Parlor

If we had written this review a year or so ago, it would have been almost entirely unmitigated praise, except for the coffee. Now, however, the tables have turned, and Four & Twenty Blackbirds is using Cafe Grumpy beans for their drip coffee and Parlor for their espresso. These are two of our favorite local roasters, and if Four & Twenty Blackbirds did a little better job of preparation, we’d be happy to come here regularly to work and drink coffee.

When the bakery first opened, we marveled at the gorgeous space, with the molded tin walls, paint job, and furniture that suggests an early American one-room schoolhouse. And the pies: beautiful slices, with uncommon flavors such as grapefruit custard, honey pear, black bottomed oatmeal, bitter chocolate orange, salt caramel apple slab, along with crowd favorites such as deep dish apple.

Lately however, even though the beautiful physical structure remains, the pies have become pedestrian, oversized, overly sweet wedges. The formerly favorite black bottom oatmeal pie has become an undifferentiated mass of sweet ingredients. Luckily, the homemade, unsweetened heavy cream, whipped up from Battenkill milk, remains delicious.
