Tar Pit and Skytown Team Up on Coffee

Tar Pit, a favorite cafe of ours in a desolate part of East Williamsburg, has taken over the coffee program at Skytown, a bar/cafe/restaurant straddling two other Brooklyn neighborhoods, Bedford Stuyvesant and Bushwick. Former motorcycle mechanic Kerry Sano, one of the owners of Tar Pit Cafe, previously owned a repair shop and became friends with Skytown owner Jeff Pan while working on his motorcycle.

The front part of the bar at Skytown now bears the moniker The Counter, and Skytown’s mediocre Stumptown drip coffee has been replaced with a full complement of standard coffee shop offerings, using Plowshares coffee roasted in Suffern, NY. The Counter will be run by Tar Pit staff, but Skytown employees will also be trained to make coffee. It will be interesting to see how this works out going forward. The only other shop doing something similar that we know of is 40 Weight Cafe, which manages the daytime coffee program inside Park Slope restaurant Sweetwolf’s.

In honor of The Counter launch, Skytown is running a special that started today and runs through Friday, April 12th. Each morning, from 8am-9am, they’re offering a free shot of whisky along with a free shot of Plowshares espresso.
