Drinking coffee at Third Rail feels a little bit like hanging out in someone’s Manhattan apartment, maybe in their kitchen. Despite the fact that the small space is often crowded, it is easy to lose track of time chatting with strangers. A wooden bench, accompanied by six regularly spaced tables and stools rings the entire wall except where it’s broken up by the rear counter, making it a place to bring your book but not your laptop (although some people try). Photos hang on the exposed brick wall and small cobalt tiles cover the back wall below a chalkboard menu of the coffee offerings.
Originally serving Intelligentsia, Third Rail Coffee now also offers Stumptown, and sometimes coffee from other roasters, both for drinking and whole bean purchases. A menu of four different coffees, made to order in a Chemex, changes regularly. The Third Rail baristas serve consistently good espresso and macchiatos, as well as advice regarding which coffees you might want to try. Pastries are from Balthazar and muffins from Brooklyn’s Blue Sky Bakery.
One of the most consistent shops in New York City, Third Rail Coffee remains a Project Latte favorite, and we are looking forward to the opening of their East Village shop, which is sure to change coffee in that neighborhood for the better.
