Stumptown Coffee Roasters at the Ace Hotel is a destination coffee bar. Not just because it is in a transitional neighborhood (where one can buy synthetic wigs in bulk). But because they sell the full spectrum of Stumptown’s seasonal offerings of whole-bean coffee roasted fresh in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Upon request, they will also make a cup of pourover coffee with any of the 20 or more varieties of coffee they have for sale. With two beautiful espresso machines and a number of prohibition-era clothed baristas, Stumptown also turns out excellent espresso and espresso beverages using their Hairbender blend.
The stained wood trim and brass details give the whole room a crafted feel, both serious and welcoming. The serpent-shaped tube lighting over the bar is particularly beautiful, as are some of the old coffee machines on the shelves behind the counter. Although there is no seating, the shallow brass-surface bar has foot-rails and faces ceiling-to-floor windows. Customers are welcome to take their coffee into the Ace Hotel lobby to relax in the leather chairs, sit at the library tables and use the free wifi (assuming they can locate one of the slips of paper floating around that contain the day’s password).
Stumptown Coffee’s baked goods and sandwiches comes from a few different places including the Breslin kitchen (next door), Momofuku Milk Bar, and Doughnut Plant. A favorite snack of ours is the tiny gingerbread loaf made by the Breslin. It’s delicate and spicy at the same time with two strips of candied ginger across the top.
