Possibly because it’s the only modern coffee shop within many blocks, in a neighborhood that still has most of its original denizens, Kensington/Windsor Terrace’s Steeplechase Coffee has a real neighborhood vibe, where people actually talk to one another. Of course, since it offers free wifi, and plugs at nearly every table, at times a hush falls over the room as the customer base becomes primarily laptop users. The music’s low enough that it doesn’t intrude but is just loud enough for listening if you care to.
The long narrow room has two and four-top hand-built tables (from salvaged wood) along a white-painted wall adorned with periodically changing art, and the coffee bar on the other, with a couple of cozy leather chairs next to a window on the bar side. Floors are polished wood veneer, the ceiling is copper-painted tin, and a short section of wall near the bathroom is exposed brick. Weather allowing, metal tables and chairs sit on the front sidewalk.
Steeplechase Coffee offers a full slate of hot and iced espresso drinks, French press house coffee, a few different pourover options, a variety of teas, bagels with various spreads, Balthazar pastries and Dough doughnuts. They’ve recently begun offering Handsome Coffee, but their espresso is Brooklyn Roasting Company’s Iris blend, which unfortunately, on most visits, has been poorly prepared.
