Located in the Financial District, R & R Coffee brings much needed specialty coffee to a neighborhood riddled with chain coffee shops and cafes. R & R is spacious and minimal, offering free wifi and plenty of space to work. The staff is friendly and the entire cafe is completely void of pretense. Although welcoming, the decor of R & R is similar to many other establishments in the neighborhood in its lack of character.

Offering Intelligenstia Coffee, R & R’s coffee menu is extensive but somewhat unfocused. The Black Cat espresso was pleasant and reminiscent of graham crackers, with a nice burnt sugar finish. Although the espressos and pourovers are well prepared, we would stay clear of the snickers cappuccino and the like.

R & R attempts to cover all of its bases by offering an excessive number of food options such as pre-packaged sandwiches, soups, juices, and yogurts, all of which are presented in an unappetizing deli/salad bar style. The pastry options are bountiful although not particularly inspiring and include scones, bagels, croissants etc., all of which look somewhat corporate in production.

Our only wish is that R & R Coffee be a little more focused overall. That is to say, less variety and more quality. This is certainly not a problem that is unique to R & R specifically, but if you’re going to open a non-chain cafe, why not focus more on quality and aesthetic and actually set yourself apart? Overall R & R Coffee is a great addition to a neighborhood greatly needing to up its coffee game. The shop is bringing better coffee to the financial district in an inviting and friendly way, which is commendable. We’re looking forward to seeing how they evolve in the future.
