Astoria’s roughhewn, atmospheric Queens Kickshaw, renowned for its craft beer (get a $10 flight) and grilled cheese, is also a coffee shop, with a serious espresso machine and a variety of pourover coffee offerings, all using beans from upstate roaster Coffee Labs. Free wifi is provided, and besides the aforementioned menu items, there’s a high quality kitchen-sink salad, and a must-order snack of curried pumpkin seeds. The husband and wife owners are active in social media and have created a friendly community space, with live music and food-related events.
It’s a pretty good place to work (albeit sometimes with earsplitting music). To your right as you enter is a large, square communal table, one edge bordered by a bench hacked out of the wall, while a small window seating area looks out over Broadway. The remainder of the large front room is taken up by the bar, counter space, and prep area on the righthand side, inhabited in the daytime by readers, eaters, and chatting friends.
The back is a long, dark, narrow-seeming room with a few stool-height four-seaters on the left wall and a couple of long, communal tables, also at stool height, all of which do double duty as daytime standing desks, and a full complement of electrical outlets along each wall.
Besides a wide-ranging craft beer selection and even some good wines by the glass, Queens Kickshaw serves a notable matcha latte and a good hot chocolate created using Mast Brothers dark chocolate. Their espresso however, while usually crafted with care, is brought down by poor source material, resulting in bitter, astringent, espresso-based drinks. Despite this, Queens Kickshaw remains a favorite Project Latte spot for the variety of quality food and drink offerings and the gorgeous design.
