In 2011, Melissa Rappaport saw the Third Wave Coffee light and opened Noella Brew Bar in roughly the same part of Park Slope as her former shop, the now-closed Ozzie’s Coffee & Tea. Noella is a warm, friendly split-level shop, with a three seat counter/pourover bar in the front and a cafe workspace up a few steps in the back, replete with pretty good wifi and plugs. Although the Counter Culture coffee currently used is far better than Ozzie’s self-roasted burnt offerings, Noella is not a serious coffee shop. Their focus is more on items such as frittatas and mac & cheese prepared in-house, filled croissants, and a standard variety of baked goods.

Despite the existence of quite a few cafes within a few block radius, Noella’s back room is usually full; regulars include students, laptop workers, and daters, with a good number of middle and high school students from the neighborhood also passing through. Noella Brew Bar shares space with a yarn store, which takes up the front portion of the shop.

We’re guessing the pourover bar, as professional-looking as it is, consisting of Clever Drippers, each with its own scale, isn’t getting a lot of pickup, considering that they have only two different coffees available these days, down from twice as many when they first opened. Even so, the coffees sometimes have roast dates as much as six weeks prior – hardly a recipe for a quality drink. Espresso is of variable quality.
