Je & Jo Comestibles is a tiny box on far west 47th Street that focuses on house made cookie dough ice cream from organic ingredients, French press and espresso coffee, and quality house made baked goods. The obscure location is a mystery to us, but the shop benefits by being a few storefronts down from Sullivan Street Bakery. They do a more than respectable job with their Cafe Grumpy espresso, and their La Marzocco espresso machine occupies a large part of the counter, with the other side being held down by the day’s baked good offerings. If you’re lucky, they’ll have their stellar honey thyme shortbread triangles when you visit.
On the righthand side, as you enter, is the ice cream menu, a large black board covered with squares of attractively-lettered butcher paper detailing the fresh ice cream available that day, usually around eight or 10 flavors. All of Je & Jo’s ice creams pair a milky base with a complementary cookie dough and recent flavors included cardamom with snicker doodle, roasted banana with chocolate chocolate chip, and coffee with spicy chocolate, and are available in single serve pre-filled cardboard cups for $4 and pints for $10.
The opposite wall sports another large rectangle of butcher paper listing the available coffee drinks, with specials such as homemade chai and fresh lemonade tacked onto the corners. Opposite the counter, three stools look out over 47th Street, usually bereft of life except for lots of car traffic.
